The Goddess of marital bliss, another aspect of Devi and first consort of Shiva.

She had yellowy orange skin, some would say gold, like Turmeric (which is yellowy orange!) but she was attractive with it.

She knocked back waves of advances from admiring kings and noble-folk when she entered adulthood. Against her fathers will she left the pampered life of the family palace and retired to the forest to worship a certain God of destruction.

Daksha didn't like Shiva much and was particularly put off by his cohort of demons and goblins. I don't suppose his hanging around in graveyards helped much! So when Dakshayani decided to marry him anyway, daddy was not amused.

He organised a big shin dig for the gods and invited everyone but the newly weds, he even erected a huge statue of Shiva and encouraged everyone present to throw hot-dogs and pickled onions at it! Dakshayani turned up anyway and this was more than she could take so she topped herself.

Shiva was furious and created Virabhadra and Mahakali from two locks of his hair, and as they proceeded to destroy everyone at the party, Shiva slung Dakshayani over his shoulders and did the dance of loons.
She broke into fifty one pieces that were scattered over the world and became Shakti Peethas, great places of pilgrimage.

After Shiva had regained his senses, he restored all of those slain back to life, even Daksha, though his severed metaphorical pig head had been replaced with that of a goat.
