Hindu warrior goddess who was created to deal with a cosmic crisis.

The asuras were on the ascent and had become a threat to cosmic stability. The male gods were unable to contain and subdue them under the leadership of Mahishasura so they gathered around Parvati and zapped her with their Godly energy.

The wife of Shiva became Durga, the stunningly beautiful invincible warrior goddess, and the big brave male gods sent a female into battle.

As well as being well armed with ten arms the Gods also ensured her arms were well armed. Rudra donated his trident, Vishnu his discus, Indra chipped in with his thunderbolt, Brahma gave her his shield, Kuber his lance, Surya a bow and arrow, Chandra an axe and Yama his mace. Vaya gave her a conch shell for reasons i'm not going to pretend to understand, Agni gave her an altogether more obviously useful third eye of destruction and Himalayas provided her a means of transport in the form of a fierce tiger.

After nine days of battle, Durga eventually killed the demons.
