Hindu God of death who ruled Yamapur from his dark palace called Kalichi.

A grim faced green giant who wore red for effect and carried a mace in one hand and a noose in the other - very handy for 'lasooing' souls and pulling them from corpses.

Most of his time was spent with his arse parked squarely on the throne of judgement, weighing up the evidence of souls brought before him by the Yama-Dutas. It was a tough job deciding which of the twenty one hells the sinners would be sent to.

He was a bit of an outcast in godly circles because of his association with death, so to make up for a lack of celestial company he would go wife seeking on his buffalo steed. Gods or mortals, it made no difference to Yama. He once took a human wife who henpecked him so much he returned to the Underworld to escape her nagging even though she had given him a son, Yama-kumar.

Yama and his twin Yami were said to be the very first mortals. As Yama was also the very first person to die he became judger of the dead by default - there were no other candidates!
