BENTEN

Aka : BENZAI-TEN, BENZAI-TENNYO, KU-DOKU

One of the the Seven Japanese Gods of Luck.

This is a little misleading as Benten is actually a Goddess. Oh well, equal rights and all that. She looks after love, eloquence, music and watery stuff and is the patroness of geishas, dancers, and musicians. She also has the knowledge.

Borrowed from the Hindu Pantheon where she was known as Saraswati, Benten became a Goddess of the Sea, but was quickly enlisted by the Shichi Fukujin, probably because of all the luck she brought sailors and fishermen.

Rumour has it the island of Enoshima rose up especially to receive her footsteps but may not have been so accomodating if it new in advance that she travels everywhere on a five-headed dragon. Still, she is a bit of a looker, despite her eight arms, and plays her lute beautifully so it can't have been too disapointed.
