A Norse dwarf. He created weapons for the gods and was promised the hand of Thors daughter Thrud in exchange.

This may seem very generous on the thunder gods part but there is one slight issue... he was away on giant bashing business at the time and knew nothing about it. Old Thor wasn't the most approachable at the best of times but arriving back at Asgard to find out his daughter had been pimped-out to a dwarf for a few lousy gifts pushed his fury to a whole new level.

But in an un-Thor like moment of clarity he realised that crumbing the dwarfs head in with Mjollnir, his default dishing out of justice, might upset Thrud just a little bit, so he got to thinking...

'Because of your vertically challenged state' said Thor, 'You're going to have to prove your wisdom by undergoing a series of tests devised by yours truly.'

Alvis couldn't believe his luck! 'Haha, i'm not known as 'all wise' for nothing, what could a lumbering oaf like Thor possibly ask that would trouble me?' thought Alvis, and you might be asking the same question.

So the first test began... then another... then another... in fact they went on right through the night, with Alvis answering every one with minimum effort. But Thor was one step ahead. He wasn't trying to test the dwarfs knowledge with tricky questions, oh no, he was using the old quantity over quality technique because he knew fine well that all dwarfs must be underground by sunrise otherwise they'll be turned to stone.

The cock crowed, the sun rose and Alvis was only halfway through thinking 'i've been had!' before he was petrified. Thor had a little giggle to himself and Thrud remained un-married.
