A dwarf who lived beneath a waterfall and was stinking rich thanks to his magical ring called Andvarinaut. He was quite evasive in the form of a trout but Loki caught him using a magical net he had borrowed from Ran.

Odin and Heimdall had been taken hostage by Hreidmar and it was all Loki's fault. He had been sent to make ammends and didn't dare fail so used all of his powers of persuasion, including the old classic 'i'll smash your head in if you don't' routine to coax Andvari into to handing over all of his riches. What else could the dwarf do but agree?

'It's not all bad' thought Andvari. 'At least i've still got the gold generating ring. I'll be rich again in no time.'
Then Loki took that too. Bugger!

Andvari did manage to curse the ring before he handed it over, to bring bad luck to anyone who owned it. This meant serious trouble for Hreidmar, Regin, Fafnir, Sigurd and a whole host of others.
