Son of Odin and Frigg. The Shining God and all round Mr. Nice Guy.

Picture this... The Gods, boozed up and rowdy, throwing axes, swords and the kitchen sink at Balder and having a right laugh as they just harmlessly bounce off, then out of nowhere came a flying twig and the good god, the kind god and the pure god was now the dead god. Can you imagine the look on their faces?

None was as suprised as Frigg who had been having terrible nightmares about the worst kind of harm befalling her favourite son and travelled the entire world to make everything in it promise not to harm Balder in anyway. With every avenue covered, or so she thought, she saw no harm in confiding in an old had named Thokk that a certain plant seemed too feeble to swear an oath. Unfortunately the hag turned out to be Loki who made a swift trip to the west of Valhalla to get him some Mistletoe.

Quickly returning to the field where the gods were amusing themselves , Loki noticed Hod wasn't joining in the frivolities.

"Oi, why ain't you joining in the frivolities?", asked Loki,

"Cos i'm blind, innit", replied Hod. "Besides, i don't have a weapon."

"No problemo, you can use this", says Loki, handing him a branch of Mistletoe.

With Loki guiding his arm, Hod let fly with the twig of mass destruction and rendered Balder dead. Talk about the kiss of death!

The gods weren't daft though, they knew Loki was responsible and would've kicked his arse there and then had they not been on consecrated ground. They also knew that this latest episode had set the wheels in motion... Ragnarok approached.

The smooth talking Hermod made a trip into the very bowels of the earth to work his magic on Hel, and suprisingly she agreed to release Balder. But, surprise surprise, there was a condition... everything on earth had to shed a tear for the popular God. How hard could it be? Everyone loved Balder, right?

Well, not quite everyone. See Hermod's entry for the lowdown.
