Fafnir had a rather unhealthy obsession with his fathers treasure, as did his brother Regin, and corrupted by the curse of Andvari's ring they killed Hreidmar to gain control of his fabulous horde of gold.

Greed turned Fafnir into a bit of a snake in nature as well as appearance and he moved to Gnita Heath refusing to give Regin a penny. Regin was a bit miffed, but what could he do?

Fafnir had taken his fathers helmet of terror and a sword known as Hrotti and made it pretty clear that Regin should buzz off or meet the same fate as Hreidmar. But Regin had a plan involving his heroic foster son Sigurd.
