The vast empty nothingness right smack in between intensely cold Niflheim and immensely hot Muspelheim.

At the beginning of time the these two 'heims' met at the cosmic void and it wasn't a pleasant meeting - the heat melted the frost and created the substance eitr. This goey poisonous gloop is said to be what all things were created from and the first thing to be created was Ymir - the daddy of all frost giants.
