Choosing a husband by the sight of his feet alone is a risky business at the best of times, so no-one was really suprised when Njords marriage to Skadi didn't work out. Unable to agree on living arrangements, with neither being particularly fond of the others homeland, they soon drifted apart.

He preferred Nerthus anyway, and had already fathered Freyr and Freyja thanks to the buxom goddesses rather generous hospitality. The fact that Nerthus was Njords sister may well be the reason for his rise in popularity as he dethroned Aegir as the Vikings top sea god.

Njord was one of the hostages who made the switch from Vanir to Aesir at the end of the great god-war, and just for the record, Odin and the Asgard crew got the far better deal.
