Son of Volsung who could drink venom with no ill-effects. Father of Sigurd with his second wife Hiordis.

He had great success in the sword in the stump contest and managed to pull a magical sword out of Odin's Branstock Tree. The sword was aptly named 'Branr' and it helped Sigmund earn legend status by smiting viscous beasties left, right and centre.

Sigmund's sword made his new brother-in-law green with envy and he was going to get it come hell of high water. Inviting the clan to Gautland to see the newlyweds wasn't the friendly trip Volsung thought it was going to be and he was killed by the Gauts on arrival. The sons were captured and tied to trees by Siggeir, and eaten one a night by his shape shifting mother who was wolfing around.

Signy had seen enough. She snook out and smeared Sigurds face with honey, not because she was kinky, but because he was the only brother she had left.

'Honey' she thought, 'might encourage wolfey-mum to give you a good licking rather than a good biting. What you do after she gets close enough is up to you. You're the heroic mastermind.'

The plan worked a treat. As the wolf lapped at his face Sigmund bit its tongue right off and made his escape.

Living in the wilderness, Sigmund went a bit wolf-like himself and took to wearing wolf skins and having sex with his sister. In no time at all she was pregnant with his son/nephew Fitela.

The duo eventually avenged the death of Volsung and there was a brief spell of peace before King Lyngi started to throw his weight around. In the heat of battle, Sigmund picked a fight with a frail old man, unfortunately it turned out to be Odin in disguise and Sigmund and his sword were smashed to pieces.

His dying wish, from the piece of him that could still talk, was for Hiordis to give the bits of his broken sword to their son Sigurd. This came as a bit of a shock to Hiordis who didn't even know she was pregnant.
