Daughter of Thjazi. Skadi is the snow shoe goddess with a mean streak.

When her dad was killed by the Gods after the Idunn saga, Scadi put on her armour and snow shoes, grabbed her sharpest weapons and skied all the way to Asgard to have a go. The Gods offered her various forms of compensation, the first of which was to choose one of them for a husband, but there was a bizarre condition ... she could only make her choice by looking at their feet.

One particularly nice pair, she thought, could only belong to all round nice guy and handsome son of Odin - Balder, already envisaging in her minds eye what fun she would have being daughter-in-law of the Aesirs Mr Big. You can imagine her disapointment when they turned out to be joined to bug ugly ex-vanir god Njord. Obviously sea water works wonders for the feet.

It was also in her terms of settlement that the gods would perform the seemingly impossible task of making her laugh so Loki had a little think and came up with a cunning plan ...

"Oi, tie this 'ere end of rope to that billy goats beard!"

Then he paused for a second, took a deep breath as he tied the other end around his testicles, and with a slap of the goats arse the tug-o-war began.

The squeels of pain from both participants raised half a grin from the miserable goddess, which turned into full blown laughter as the rope snapped and Loki landed in Scadi's lap with his swollen bits and bobs looking like the last chicken in Sainsbury's!

Unfortunately, things didn't turn out very well for the newly weds. Skadi wanted to live in Prymheim, a mountain realm in Jotunheim that belonged to her father Thjazi, because the screeching seagulls were keeping her awake, but Njord wanted to remain by the sea in his hall of Noatun. He didn't care much for the mountains, preferring the song of the swans over the howling of wolves, so they tried a '9 days at your place then 9 days at mine' compromise but it didn't last.

When Loki is bound to a rock with the entrails of his own son after the murder of Balder, Skadi places a serpant on the tree above his head to eternally drip venom onto his face.
