The First of the Rime Giants created from droplets of melting frosty chaos as Niflheim met Muspelheim at Ginnungagap.

The same drops also created the cosmic cow Audumla who licked at the ice until she'd unearthed Buri the very first God.

As Ymir slept he was sprayed with stray sparks from the toasty Muspelheim and a six headed giant called Bergelmir grew from his sweaty feet, while Bolthorn and Bestla sprouted from his armpits.

Bestla married Bor and they had three offspring - Vili, Ve and Odin - who didn't show much family loyalty as they mullered Grandad Ymir as he slept.

He bled so much the entire race of Rime Giants were drowned except for Bergelmir who was smart enough to climb into a boat and sneak away on the sea of blood to pastures new with his missus.

Odin and co. then smashed Grandad Ymir's body up and threw the bits into the void - nothing was wasted - his blood had already created the ocean, his flesh became the land, broken bones and teeth the hills and mountains.

They made particularly creative use of his head with the skull becoming heaven, his brain the clouds and his eyebrows Midgard.
