( Coh-ah-tlee-kway ) COATLICUE

Aka : TETEOINAN, TONANTZIN
Goddess of : The Earth | Tonalli : n/a | Trecena : n/a

The Aztec Earth Goddess and Mother of the Gods known as 'serpent skirt' for obvious reasons.

Her outrageous attire also included a necklace made from human hearts and skulls and her feet and hands were adorned with razor sharp claws.

She was the wife of Mixcoatl and they created the Southern Star Gods known as Centzon Huitznahuas. Rumour has it she also mothered Xolotl and Quetzalcoatl via a little divine intervention and gave birth to another son under very dodgy circumstances...

After a ball of humming bird feathers drifted into the temple where she was cleaning and brushed against her she became pregnant. Eldest daughter Coyolxauhqui, who for some unfathomable reason was under the impression her mother was still a virgin despite having 400+ children, rallied her brothers and sisters with the intention of killing the shame.

Unfortunately for them, Coatlicue gave birth to a fully grown and armed to the teeth Huitzilopochtli who proceeded to kill his siblings and devour their hearts. Coyolxauhqui was singled out for extra special treatment and had her limbs hacked off and her head thrown into the sky where she became the moon.

Maybe this sorry series of events pushed Coatlicue to the brink of madness and she decided that Cihuacoatl was the way to go.
