( Meek-tlahn-tay-COO-tlee)MICTLANTECUHTLI

Aka : ITZCUINTLI, MICTLANTECUHTZI, TZONTEMOC
God of : Mictlan | Tonalli : ITZCUINTLI (dog) | Trecena : TECPATL (1 Flint - 13 Dog)

God of death, guardian of the bones of the deceased and King of Mictlan, the 9th and lowest section of the Aztec underworld.

In Aztec mythology the wearing of bones, skulls and various other bodyparts was all the rage. In this respect Mictlantecuhtli was king of the catwalK, going the full-hog and appearing as a blood splattered skeleton. Throw in an owl feather head-dress, an entourage of creepy crawlies and a necklace made from human eyeballs and he had women going weak at the knees.

I can only speculate, but seeing her husband bombarded with smitten females hemp nick-nacks must've pleased his long suffereing missus Mictecacihuatl no end!

Ritual cannibal-a-thons were held in his honor and with so much wallop as far as job titles go, the booze ups were many. He was one of the twenty God of the day signs, one of only a few deities held to govern over all three types of souls, the source of souls for those born on the sixth day of the thirteen day week, the fifth of the nine Aztec night Gods and the secondary week God for the tenth week of the twenty-week cycle of the calendar. Try remembering that lot while Quetzalcoatl is doing a smash and grab on your stockpile of bones!
