( TLAHL-lock)TLALOC

Aka : NUHUALPILLI
God of : Rain, Fertility | Tonalli : MAZATL (deer) | Trecena : QUIAHUITL : 1 Rain - 13 Monkey

Aztec God of rain and fertility, the lord of Tlalocan - the fourth heaven, home to water induced deaths victims.

After Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl's too-and-fro world creation/destruction shennanigans, Tlaloc became the sun and ruler of the third creation, only to see Quetzalcoatl wreak havoc again when he destroyed the world with fire. The handful of men that survived were turned into birds.

Tlaloc was greatly feared by the Aztecs who believed he was created by the other gods with the sole intention of bringing floods and droughts and also because he was a dodgy shade of blue with fangs. And what's with those goggle eyes?

He carried a huge rattle which he would shake to make thunder and four jugs of water which when emptied would each have a different effect on the earth - life, blight, frost and total destruction. Needless to say, the emptying of jug four was something the Aztecs sought to avoid at all costs and they weren't too enthused about his lightning bolt throwing antics either. Maybe he was so grumpy because Tezcatlipoca stole away his first wife xochiquetzal and forced her to marry him?

Anyway, he had to be appeased and in true Aztec tradition there was only one way ...
Children were dragged to the sacrificial slab where they were forced to cry by having their finger nails ripped off - the tears were then collected and offered to Tlaloc as an appetiser. For the main course the children were sacrified by drowning.

He's now married to Chalchiuhtlicue (who succeeded Tlaloc as ruler of the fourth world) having come to terms with the loss of his first wife, but his demeanor hasn't improved any for it.
