Lord Vishnu, top-dog god of maintenance, had an Avatar for every occasion :

1. Matsya - The lowly goldfish who grew to epic proportions
2. Kurma - The humble Amphibian who supported Mandara
3. Varaha - The Boar who retrieved the earth
4. Narasimha - The lion man who killed Hiranyakashipu
5. Vamana - The dwarf who baffled Bali with three huge strides
6. Parashurama - Axe wielding killer of Arjuna
7. Rama - Who destroyed the demon Ravana
8. Krishna - Who destroyed the evil King Kamsa
9. Gautama Buddha - The perfect spiritual being
10. Kalki - The 'not yet here' Avatar

In later Hinduism Vishnu's Avatars were stretched to twelve and said to symbolize the seasons. Twelve seasons? I don't get it!
