Ambika was deprived of children by the death of her husband Vichitravirya, so his mother sent Vyasa to help her out. It was a real family affair.

Apparently Ambika was so scared of the Yogi's awesome form, and i'm assuming that means his image not his man tackle, that she closed her eyes when he was blessing her with a son. Unfortunately this meant that Dhritarashtra was born blind.

His brother, Pandu, future father of the Pandavas, ran the Kingdom for him and as a mark of honour his wife Ghandari spent her entire life blindfolded. She only took it off once to cop a look at her son Duryodhana, but it wasn't to give him the glad eye.
