DITI

The earth goddess daughter of Daksha, sister of Aditi and one of Kashyapa's twelve wives.

Eager to have children, Diti showed absolutely no etiquette when she grabbed poor old Kashyapa and helped herself to some sweet loving.

Unsurprisingly the resulting offspring were just as crude.

Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha were chiefs of the Daityas, a kind of Asura or demi-god, and while not strictly demons they weren't very pleasant at the best of times. They hated Aunt Aditi almost as much as Diti did, and they hated her children even more, because they're real gods, the Adityas.

Diti was adamant that she could create a son more powerful than the king of gods and so she kept herself pregnant for an entire century while she practiced her dark magic. Indra figured out what was going on and became more than a little concerned. He could see the child was going to be a serious handful so he threw a thunderbolt at the fetus and the Maruts were born from the fragments.
