Naked, skinny and rather ill looking old man who relieves the deceased of their clothes as they cross the Shozukawa River en-route to the underworld.

Apparently, hanging their garments on a leafless tree is proof that the dead really are dead and they should forget any plans they might have of returning to the mortal world. Dead and naked? Talk about rubbing salt into wounds!
