The Ancient Japanese Custom of Pilfering Divine Booty.

Back in the day, stealing statues of gods and goddesses from temples was all the rage and said to assure the nimble-fingered of good fortune, especially if they managed to get them to the end of year market in the Asakusa Kannon temple.

Obviously, being caught in the act would render any potential fortune null and void, and i'm convinced there was a little misunderstanding somewhere between the good fortune and the stealing. Ignorance is bliss.

I'm almost positive the clergy didn't approve of this.
