The Japanese Goddess of Compassion and Mercy.

She is Japan's answer to China's Guan Yin, who was a female manifestation of India's saintly Boddhisattva Avolokiteshvara, and just to add a tad more spice she comes in 33 flavours herself.

Being a Bosatsu, Kannon is all compassion, selflessly tending to tortured souls even though her enlightened state has guaranteed her a place in Nirvana.

As Juichimen Kannon, she is in eternal vigil mode with a constant eye out for the needy. This is a job you need eleven faces for. The Batto Kannon incarnation looks after horse driven carts and also offers protection from smallpox. And in the form of the four armed Niorin, fishermen are in safe hands.
